Living in America, made me look into the US laws! And then I realized that this big country has 50 little countries inside of it, with their own rules. So it’s more like Europe, only in Europe we have all the different languages when you cross a border instead of everybody speaking English. But really every state has own rules and laws. Of course we know that some states have the death penalty and some don’t and that is the same with abortion. But a state can also decide if a resident (non US citizen) will need to have a drivers license from that state or not. … More US driver’s license
The first weeks were about getting organized! Back in the Netherlands Freek already made some calls to get electricity and gas. The first thing they would ask him; “what is your social security number…?” So as you may remember from a former blog that we didn’t got those yet. But he could arrange gas and electricity from the Netherlands, so the landlord would know we were going to pay those ourselves. … More Arranging…. That Social Security Number
Everybody knows the scenes in the movies where the mailman posts the mail in the mailboxes standing in front of the houses. When coming back at the house we rent we didn’t see those mailboxes, but two blocks away we did see them! The question was “Where are we going to get our mail?” That was something we really wanted to know, because our social security cards should have been arrived by now. … More You’ve got mail? uhh where did it go then….
Okay in the last days you have to say goodbye to your closest family. We noticed Marlo didn’t want to give hugs and kisses to say goodbye so we would just let him. Nolan also needed a little bit of encouragement to say goodbye. We didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, so it would be a little bit easier for the boys. The last evening we had a BBQ with all the grandparents and Marlo and Nolan did like that. … More The biggest move (probably) of our life
Our last week in the Netherlands we stayed at my mom and dad. And every day Freek and I went to the house when the movers were there. Nolan already asked after 3 days are you going to our old house now? He was already getting a little bit of a closure to go to America. … More Packing up the house
So there we went to find a house in Albuquerque… Fingers crossed whether we find something.
Even our corporate living agent whom we met at the hotel on Monday morning was a bit anxious to find us a house within a week. The Friday before he sent an email to take a look at houses, but by Monday they were all rented out already…. Luckily we could still see two houses in Albuquerque and one in Rio Rancho. So there we went. … More Finding a house!!
You do it consciously and unconsciously, and whether you want it or not. Check things that you think this was the last time before we leave to Albuquerque. … More “Last Times”
At the counter of the municipality: “Can this young man write his name himself?” Freek looked questionably at Marlo. He left us surprised by writing his name down nicely and now he has a nice signature on his passport. A passport that will soon contain a visa so that we can move to America. … More Documents needed for a workvisa in USA
When we were looking for houses some 8 years ago we were actually home viewing with a real estate agent the house next door. However, that house needed so many renovations that we told the real estate agent it was not to our liking, yet we mentioned we did like the neigbhorhood. Before actually stepping back in our car to leave, the owner from the house next door whom had overheard our conversation came to us and said if you like the neighborhood please know that our home will be on the market soon. So if you like you can take a look around already. But the house never came on the market, because her own home viewing resulted in us buying our own little palace the week after. … More Renting out our “Little Palace”
Nolan my youngest son would always ask me when I had to work “are you staying at home or do you need to go somewhere.” As if I wasn’t working when being at my homeoffice. But now my working days are over… … More Stay at home mom
